Started on the multi part series known as "The talk" with my oldest boy today. He's heading to his first dance soon, so I thought I'd head him off at the pass. It was a bit uncomfortable at first, but it got better as we went along. I'm thinking this is going to be an ongoing discussion. Yes, he's 11, but I thought it would be better to start earlier than too late.
Anybody else get it done in one shot?
Andy

11 isn't too early these days. You're a good dad, Andy.

6th grade.
Dan,
He listens to AC/DC and Bon Scott is his idol, so I figured I'd better head it off at the pass. He's got 3 guitars, and plays them well.
Maybe he'll toss me some of the B grade groupies when he makes it big.

I can hear the conversation now: "Hey Hunter - who's that Skank you dragged on the tour bus?" "Oh, that's just some B-grade groupie I'm stringing along for my Old Man!" You should invite over Uncle Joe to "help" with your talks. He'll need to tell your soon-to-be-rocker of a boy all about the Ping Pong Paddle Club!

It'll be a few years before I explain the meaning of "skank".

Great job, Andy. You guys know about "freak dancing" at schools these days? In my day the dance floor apex was a slow dance with your hands on her ass... Now it's closer to a lap dance, and it's routine (this article is 2 years old): http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/248536_freakdancing16.htmlThe local high school here is having trouble getting teachers to chaperon dances because it pisses them off so much. Parents don't want to see it either.

Then why don't the schools just ban it if the majority of parents don't want to see it.

School boards, Super intendants, and other adminstrators down have the balls to stick up to parents any more. It seems that any time a parents sneezes anymore that schools stop to see what they can do to just make the parents happy again, regarless of it is right or wrong.

Nothing wrong with Rosie. Somebody has to do the heavy lifting.
[rant on] BTW Professor,
I am the president of my town's school board, and I have no issue standing up to anybody. Go figure that a degenrate like me is an elected official. If they want the job, let them come to all of these meetings and put in all of the effort for what we get paid. Last time I checked, I don't get paid a dime. We have a great little community, albeit somewhat protected from what some city dwellers deal with. The parents also do a great job of looking out for one another's kids.
When the school made my son turn his shirt inside out because the Green Day logo on it had a heart shaped hand grenade on it, I told the superintendent that there were bigger issues to deal with. I took my school board hat off and talked to the Sup as a parent on that issue, and we came to a mutual agreement. I have stood the ground on common sense so that we don't get caught up in the zero tolerance issues that sound good, but don't wash in the real world.
It's a little different where I live than what you experience.
[rant off]
